With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, you might be thinking about how to express your feelings with a classic gift: flowers. But different colors have different meanings. The meanings below are derived from S. Theresa Dietz’s The Complete Language of Flowers.

Red roses of course mean romance. I’m sure we have learned that through movies, shows, and Valentine’s Day. Red roses symbolize beauty, courage, desire, passion, and respect.
Pink roses are a way to say thanks and also signify confidence, desire, elegance, energy, everlasting joy, grace, sweetness, and perfection.

Light pink roses demonstrate appreciation and signify happiness, grace, and admiration.
Lavender roses have an air of enchantment and wonder and signify unique love or love at first sight.

Another fairly known meaning given that the most popular wedding flowers are white. White roses symbolize purity, innocence, eternal love, new beginnings, and hope.
Peach roses denote gratitude, fascination, enthusiasm, immortality, and sincerity.

Coral roses are the “first date” rose, saying something between “I love you,” and “You’re a great friend.” These roses convey excitement and desire.
Yellow roses are the friendship rose, signifying happiness and pride. Don’t give this one to your significant other!

Sometimes words can only say so much, and actions, such as thoughtfully choosing which roses to gift, can express so much more. I hope this helps you the next time you are buying flowers for someone you care about.
